It can be hard to know what to do when you see a friend or loved one in pain. Knowing what to do beforehand can help you be more prepared in the future for if you are with someone experiencing a panic attack.

Some warning signs they may be having a panic attack are:

  • Sense of impending doom or danger.
  • Fear of loss of control or death.
  • Rapid, pounding heart rate.
  • Sweating.
  • Trembling or shaking.
  • Shortness of breath or tightness in your throat.
  • Chills.
  • Hot flashes.

What to do if a loved one is having a panic attack:

  • stay with them
  • offer their medicine
  • ask them what they need
  • breathe slowly with them
  • remain calm
